Don’t get beat by changing beats!

Along with the flood of newspaper outlets closing these days comes a [obvious] mass beat-migration of reporters and editors. For many, these changes also include an outlet switch. Unfortunately for PR-peeps like me, it’s hard to keep up with this tremendous cycle. Even ever-beloved software that helps me find contact information and pitching details for reporters can’t keep up with this dance-floor shuffle of the media industry.

So many times over the last few months I’ve heard the phrase he / she “isn’t writing for this section / paper anymore…” or “I’m not writing about [topic] anymore, call [so-and-so].”
Fortunately, there is help waiting with the uber-popular (yes, here it comes again) Twitter, so I thought I’d share a sources that provide Twitter handles for journalists: Media on Twitter.

Not only does following journalists / editors on Twitter provide “a porthole into their personal lives,” as Mary Clare says in one of her posts, but it also gives PR professionals the ability to stay up-to-date on necessary industry info. By following these need-to-know journalists on Twitter and staying in-the-know via social networking, we’ll all be able to keep up with who’s moving where when faster than the news can report it.
